In October 2023, I got a chance to see and interview the gold standard of mascots of all time, probably by far the most famous and popular one ever created. He is the one who has been representing Kumamoto Prefecture since 2010.
If you are unsure where to go in Kumamoto, why don’t you stop by a historically significant port that has been preserved in extremely good condition? It is called Misumi West Port. It was built in the late 19th century and was a significant port for shipping industrial materials such as coal. That period is called Meiji era, and it was a turning point for Japan's development.
If you are traveling with your family, here is a fun thing to do.
All you need to do is install a special application, and get a flyer of the game, then you can play hide and seek with Kumamon. The app uses AR function – Augmented Reality – so that Kumamon appears on your phone if you successfully find him! Please note that you must be at the port in order to play hide & seek with Kumamon.

A1. It makes me retrospective!
Q2. Do you know who planned and built this port?
A2. Yeah! Mr. Rouwenhorst Mulder did it in 1887. He was from the Netherlands!
Q3. Have you found any favorite spots around here?
A3. It is called ’Urashimaya’!
Q4. Can you tell me why?
A4. It seems like it takes me back to somewhere.
Q5. So, if you like this spot, does it mean you’d like to ‘hide’?
A5. Guess what. It is a secret!
Q6. Could I have a message from you to the fans?
A6. I would be so happy if you visited this port and played the game with me! I will be waiting and hiding!

2023年10月、県内一の有名人の撮影の裏側に密着させていただきました！なんと、くまモンのAR (拡張現実)の撮影です！
この度、三角西港のいろんなところに隠れたくまモンとかくれんぼするARゲームが2023年12月17日 (日) より登場します！記事の最後にくまモンにインタビューをしたところ、快く答えてくれたのでそちらもご覧ください！
そもそもARって？
Augmented Realityの略で「拡張された現実」が直訳です。どういうことかと言うと、インターネット上のコンテンツを現実世界に重ね合わせて表示する技術と仕組みの総称です。
実際にどのように使うのでしょうか？
スマートフォンの位置情報 (GPS) を使うゲームが代表的です。ある特定の場所でカメラをかざすと、画面に映った現実世界の映像の中にキャラクターが現れ、あたかも現実の中にそのキャラクターがいるような「拡張」された「現実」でゲームを楽しむことができます。
三角西港にいらっしゃった際には奥深い歴史を学ぶだけではなく、ご家族でスマホを片手にいろんなところに隠れたくまモンを探すのも楽しそうですね。
県内外、海外からの観光客の皆さんにも是非おすすめです。
